The JVO team has been collaborating with Matsuoka for long, and he told to us this idea some months ago. The GGF needs a prominent application area to demonstrate the power of the GRID technology, and he believes astronomy (I would say Images on astronomy) is the best to attract many people to the GRID world.

Life science is strongly related with the business, and it is strongly required to
have very secure environment to protect personal informations. HEP is waiting for the completion of the Large Hadron Collider a CERN, and not many people in the world are interested in High Energy Physics. Astronomy already has huge data set, and there are so many amateur astronomers and astronomy fans in the world. Astronomical images are more attractive than those in high energy physics, as you can easily understand. The fundamental GRID techniques to be used in astronomical VOs can also be implemented to business applications with some modifications and upgrades. These are the backgrounds why Matsuoka hopes to establish such a group in GGF, I think.
