There was a smiley! If a standard exists there are probably a bunch of good reasons, and someone at some point has used it for those reasons...

This was mostly bait to get someone to scream and shout and prove to Roy that it isn't going to be easy to separate Astronomers from their beloved and cherished time systems. Even more than position Astronomers obsess about time, and yes depressingly, lots of people report HJD...
