The organisers would like to cordially invite you to register for The Euro-VO DCA workshop ============================================= "Theory in the Virtual Observatory” ============================================= to be held in Garching, Germany. April 7- April 9 2008 ************************************** Please visit our web-site at: http://www.si.inaf.it/eurovow2008/index.htm for further details. ************************************** The Virtual Observatory is an international astronomical community-based initiative. It aims to allow global electronic access to the available astronomical data archives of space and ground-based observatories, as well as simulation databases. It also aims to enable data analysis techniques through a coordinating entity that will provide common standards, wide-network bandwidth, and state-of-the-art analysis tools. VO efforts have mainly concentrated on observational data archives and services, but recently results from theoretical research have started attracting more attention. The main goal of this workshop is to outline needs and challenges that computational and theoretical astrophysics will be facing in the coming years, and to identify how the unique capabilities intrinsic to the Virtual Observatory concept can meet them. To achieve its goals, the workshop targets two main audiences: - The first is the community of theoreticians who wish to take the initial steps necessary to publish their results online, making them accessible to the world-wild community, or who want to make available on-the-fly services to extract or analyze theoretical data. - The second audience comprises users of such published data sets and services. This includes other theoreticians, but a particular goal is to support observers who seek theoretical data and/or on-line services to make possible detailed comparisons with their observational results. The following topics have been identified for discussion during the workshop (TBC): - 3D simulations: N-body, hydro, MHD etc - micro-simulations: stellar evolution, stellar atmospheres, population synthesis etc. - theory-theory interoperability: how do theorists share/use each other's results - theory-observational interface: use of theory data and services by observers - theory and grid In order to ensure an intense debate and a high level of interaction, a substantial fraction of the Workshop will be dedicated to round-table discussions focused on each of the above topics. This workshop is organised back-to-back with the Euro-VO DCA workshop "Grid and the Virtual Observatory" , which takes place from April 9-11, 2008, also in Garching. It is assumed that many participants will want to attend both workshops. Information about that workshop can be found at the same website.
