I meant to add to this point.

It's true that CVS or Subversion can become confusing if multiple people make overlapping changes to a file. However if this happens in a project it's usually regarded as a sign -- an early warning -- that the project has poor lines of communication Such sychronisation can be as formal or as informal as the project wishes, but as long as it exists in some form, VC systems can help even very large projects work very well indeed.
