Well so is SQL called a query language, but it has handy things like UPDATE, DELETE, DROP, and more creatively, CREATE. I think ADQL will need the same. The SQL example isn't necessarily a good one to follow, but I think we are mostly agreed that it's better to follow it than to invent something that might be worse.

Really: you mean like - all at once versus a byte at a time? Or do you mean like really delete it versus moving it to the grid-wastebasket (an ikon of a black-hole might be appropriate for that, unless someone has already copyrighted that idea).
