A user or developer learns the usage of SQL by reading a SQL reference book rather than reading a ADQL spec, since ADQL spec does not describe the meaning of the sentense. So it is better to make the difference as littele as possible.
Anyway, making the AS keyword mandatory does not make so much impact for the users and developers, it may be mandatory.
