My apologies, using the wrong words. You're all quite right that the community will decide on the *defacto* standards (eventually). However we are in the process of making a set of standards ourselves that we will present to the community to make use of and select from. Let's not make VOTable the *default* standard in our development, for all the reasons I've given.

While I appreciate that VOTable can be used to wrap FITS, this is (I hope) a temporary measure while we sort out our data models and representations. We should recognise it as such and put future effort into producing suitable solutions, not in overloading VOTable to represent all data formats. FITS files too have limited structures.
